On April 27, the fascist regime in Turkey proved once again its sexist and rapist nature by acquitting 8 rapists at the hearing of a gang rape case in Fethiye, Mugla.
In 2007, the hotel receptionist B.S. was violated by 8 men, among them employees of the Provincial Education Directorate. Despite the file charged by the violated women, the case was only opened after a long time and a lot of pressure by women`s organisations. Finally, all the rapists have been acquitted under the pretext of "lack of evidence". Thus, the court did not count the report of the institution of forensic medicine, the report of the gynaecologist, the contradictious depositions of the accused and the report proving that the signals of the mobile phones were all at the crime scene as evidence. This new scandalous court decision effectively legalising rape by not prosecuting it is not an exception but an everyday occurrence in the fascist Turkish regime. {divide}
Since the beginning, women`s organisation interfered in the case, blamed the rapist nature of the judicial system and the bourgeois Turkish state and organised solidarity with B.S. One day before the court hearing, the Democratic Women`s Platform Antep organised a street action with a banner saying "No to class, national and sexual exploitation" in the Yesilsu Park stating that they will continue the women solidarity, which made the opening of the trial possible.
On April 27, hundreds of women from women`s organisations from Izmir, Ankara and Istanbul went to Fethiye in order to participate in the trial. During the hearing the women waited in front of the court building and protested against the acquittal of the rapists stating "this case will not terminate before we say it". They blocked the traffic in front of the court building and started a demonstration. After the police stopped the demonstration, the women continued their protest with a sit-in.
Moreover, the Women´s Initiative against Rape organised a protest action against the acquittal of the rapists in Taksim, Istanbul. Saying that rape has been legalised by this decision they stated "this case is not over yet" and shouted slogans like "long live women´s solidarity" at the action.
