Guler Zere, political prisoner from DHKP-C, who was not released from prison for a long time despite having a cancer, thus being hindered from access to medical treatment, turned into a martyr on May 7 at her home in Kucukarmutlu, Istanbul. {divide}
Guler Zere spent 14 years in prison. Despite 5 medical reports indicating that she should be set free due to palatal cancer, she was not released from prison for a long time. When she was set free on November 6, 2009 as a result of the struggle started by the Popular Front and participated by varios revolutionary and democratic organisations demanding freedom for Zere and other ill political prisoners, the illness had got even worse. Beside the revolutionary forces, the struggle for the freedom of Zere partially mobilised the democratic mass organisations and professional chambers such as TTB . The doctor of Zere said: "If she were set free 4 months ago, it would be possible to save her".
After the martyrdom of Guler Zere, the Popular Front organised a ceremony in Kucukarmutlu Cemevi. Her comrades arrived there shouting the slogans "Guler Zere is immortal!", "The murderer state will pay account!" and "The murderer of Guler Zere is the government of AKP !" and they stressed in their speeches that it was not the cancer but the government of AKP who killed Zere by hindering medical treatment. Various democratic and revolutionary organizations supported the activity at which approximately 600 people participated.
Corresponding to her last wish, she was buried in the Cemetery of Gulmez in Elazig next to her comrades on May 9.
Many commemorations for Guler Zere and many protests against the government of AKP were organized in many cities including Ankara, Elazig, Malatya and Mersin. The laboring neighborhoods of Istanbul, among them Gazi , Sarigazi and Nurtepe, bid farewell to Zere through actions.
The militants of our party MLCP put up a banner read "Guler Zere is immortal" in the Gazi district.
