International Conference on the Right to Housing organised by the Coordination for the Right to Housing started on February 4 in Istanbul. Istanbul Coordination for the Right to Housing made a speech saying that housing demolition is a big problem in Turkey and that the aim of this gathering is to inform each other on the experiences of the struggle. The delegates coming from different countries such as China, Pakistan, Egypt, Brazil, Argentine, South Africa and the Dominican Republic said that the neo-liberal politics have many common points such as that housing demolition generally takes place in order to built shopping centres, motorways, trade centres and luxurious apartment complexes and that the plots of land in the cities or sold for nearly nothing to the big capital. {divide}The delegates continued to inform on the problem of housing demolition in their own countries and on their struggle.
On February 6, an International March for the Right to Housing was organised at Istiklal Street, Istanbul. The defenders of the right to housing carried the banner read "The poor of the towns of the world unite for the right to housing. The activists made calls to " struggle for everyone to have the right to free housing under human conditions". During the march the activists frequently shouted the slogans "Long live our international struggle" and "Give everyone the right to free housing" in different languages. After the march different speeches were made, among them a speech by Eduardo Solari from the Utopia and Future Movement from Brazil calling to struggle against capitalism and for the future.
The participants of the conference later on visited the people of the quarter Sancaktepe Akpinar. They walked around in the quarter and listened to the people telling them their experience such as the people of three quarters uniting whose houses want to be demolished.
