24 workers who had been dismissed by the subcontracting firm Yet Denizcilik affiliated to İstanbul Torgem Shipyard continue with their resistance started on November 9. The workers who are also members of Limter-Is realise a march every morning walking in front of the shipyard where they put up their tents. The workers demand their salary of the last 4 months, their social rights as well as the compensation they are entitled to get. {divide}
On the 13th day of their resistance, the workers had started a 5 days lasting hunger strike besides many other actions and activities. Torgem Shipyard workers call on the workers of the other shipyards to join the organised struggle against the bad working conditions.
While the resistance continues, a shipyard worker, Ercan Sancar, has lost his life as a result of a so-called workplace accident at Gemtis Shipyard. Thus the number of the workers who has died as a result of the so-called workplace accidents in the last 14 years has reached to 130 at the shipyards of Tuzla, which is a paradise of flexible work and subcontracted labour.
At the shipyards zone of Tuzla, where 40 thousand workers were employed a short time ago, approximately 30 thousand workers lost their jobs under the pretext of ongoing crisis during the economic crisis. The salaries are not being paid and the main reason for the so-called workplace accidents are too long working hours and the lack of safety measures. The shipyard workers have been struggling against this under the leadership of their trade union Lmter-Is for a long time. In February 2008 and June 2008, two big zone-wide strikes were carried out against the so-called workplace accidents.
