The clashes which broke out between the Turkic Uyghurs in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of China and the Chinese state turned into one of the main topics of the political agenda of Turkey/Northern Kurdistan in the last month.
The clashes started on June 26 with a conflict among Han Chinese workers and Turkic Uyghur workers in a toy factory located in the province Guangdong. The conflict started with protests against the discriminatory attitude of the Han Chinese and turned into big clashes in the days after.
It is remarkable that the clashes in the Uyghur Autonomous Region coincided with Turkmenistan and China announcing the firming of an agreement on natural gas on June 24 while the competition and the diplomatic games among the US and Russian imperialists on the natural gas of Turkmenistan are continuing. An even more striking dimension is that according to the agreement the pipelines which will carry the Turkmen natural gas to China will pass the Uyghur Autonomous Region near its capital Urumchi. The known US-relation of Rabia Kadir, who was declared as the "leader of the Turkic Uyghurs", shows that the USA tries to use the Uyghurs, as well as other national communities in China, as an element of the imperialist competition with China.
The fact that the USA is making plans on the Uyghurs should not lead to ignore the oppression of the imperialist Chinese state against the Uyghur people. China is increasing the national oppression against the national communities in the country for a long time. In 2007, Uyghur language was abolished as official language of the Uyghur Autonomous Region and replaced by Chinese. A demographic policy basing on transferring Chinese people to the region and transferring Uyghur people to other regions has been applied. One of the important pillars of this policy was to employ the Uyghurs as cheap labour force in the regions where the hardest work conditions are prevailing. One of the first measures the Chinese imperialism undertook during the last clashes was to close the mosques for the "safety of the people". It garrisoned thousands of soldiers in the town. More than thousand people were detained. Fire was opened at the demonstrators.
Therefore, the demand of the Uyghurs for more autonomy or even independence cannot be considered as an empty provocation fabricated by the US imperialism, it should be known that this demands and struggles of an national democratic character do have an objective background. The struggle against imperialism is not only limited with the struggle against the US imperialism. Moreover, it is necessary to include the topic of anti-imperialist struggle against China, which is a rising imperialist force, more to the agenda. China is one of the states who have the chance to be in the most advantageous position after the changes which will occur concerning the balance among the imperialist forces after the continuing economic crisis. To take the side of China in any situation of imperialist competition between the USA and China is not only an incomplete attitude limited to anti-Americanism but means to support imperialism in the name of anti-imperialism.
Another aspect of this attitude is to burden socialism with the blames of the repressive policies of imperialist China. For instance putting forward sayings of "communist China", the Turkish bourgeois media and the reactionary-fascist centres tried to palm the national oppression experienced by the Turkic Uyghurs off on the revolution and on socialism. Showing imperialist China as red China is a chauvinist distortion on purpose.
At the same time, it is very upset that the clashes broke out between Chinese and Uyghur workers. In a country like China, where the exploitation of labour has brutal and massacring dimensions it is one of the biggest dangers for the anti-imperialist and anti-capitalist struggles in the country that the workers and labourers are incited against each other in this way.
The topic is also for a long time on the agenda of the Turkish bourgeoisie. While the policy of denial and annihilation against the Kurdish nation and the attitude towards the Armenian genocide of the Turkish state is blatantly obvious, Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan said with all its hypocrisy "these events in China are in fact genocide". The Trade Minister of Turkey Nihat Ergun made a call to boycott Chinese products.
The racist policies of the Turkish state on the Azerbaijani, Uzbek, Uyghur etc. nations in Central Asia of Central Asian Turkic descent, are nothing new. The Turkish state also attempted to do a coup in Azerbaijan. The attempts of provocation which it arranged with the Turkmen in critical regions like Mosul and Kerkuk of Southern Kurdistan are still continuing. The "big Turan" dreams "reaching until the Chinese wall" are one of the main ideological arguments of the Turkish fascist regime. At the same time there is no doubt that the Turkish state, which is a neo-colony of imperialism, has not even the chance to come up with such tall policies reaching until the Chinese wall. The close interest of the Turkish state in the clashes in the Uyghur region are aiming on one hand at increasing the chauvinist stuff of its own racist fascist official and civil organisations and on the other hand at increasing its right to speak on the Eurasia policies. However, of course the historical/ideological connections and arguments are not the only reason for this close interest of Turkey in the Uyghurs.
The relation of Rabia Kadir, who has been presented as leader of the Turkic Uyghurs, with the USA, is evident. Rabia Kadir is not the leader of the Uyghur people, but one of the outstanding persons of the Chinese bourgeoisie. Some time, she was one of the 10 richest persons in China. Resulting from the internal contradictions of the Chinese state she was in prison and later released due to the personal interference of C. Rice. After having been released she settled down in the USA. The fact that the Turkish state gave Kadir a visa shows that the main reason for its attitude concerning the Uyghurs is its role of a collaborator of the USA in the Eurasia competition.
