TUYAB, TAYAD , the Istanbul branch of the IHD and TOHAV organised a symposium under the title "The reality of isolation in the prisons of Turkey" on November 16 at the Dolapdere Campus of the Bilgi University in order to attract attention of the arbitrary practices and the torture of isolation in the prisons.{divide}
The symposium started with a minute of silence in commemoration of Engin Ceber, who lost his life on October 8, 2008 as a result of the torture he was exposed to in the prison of Metris and dealt with the medical, psychological and juridical dimensions of isolation. Besides one speech of each of the organising organisations, also TUAD , TIHV, CHD and the Artists against Isolation made speeches. The inauguration speech was delivered by Bernard Granjon, honorary chairman of the Doctors of the World. The speeches dealt with the physical and psychological effects of the isolation torture on the prisoners and underlined that similar practices exist also in Europe, especially in Germany and France. Furthermore, it was underlined that 79% of the prisoners released from the F-type prisons have psychiatric problems. The representatives of TUYAB and TAYAD underlined the political aims of isolation and the increase of infringement of rights in the prisons in last period at the symposium. The symposium ended with a free discussion.
