When on October 17 the lawyers of Abdullah Ocalan having been behind bars for 9 years in isolation at Imrali prison announced that he faced physical and psychological attacks as well as was threatened to be killed, the Kurdish people went on the streets in many cities of Turkey and Kurdistan as well as Europe.
In Amed the protests of the Kurdish people turned into serhildan s. Besides the attacks on Ocalan, prime minister Erdogan`s visit to the city was also protested, shops were closed, schools boycotted. The people of Amed have been on the streets since October 20, and lighted serhildan fires and constructed barricades against the attacks of the police with tanks, gas and water cannons. The police did not manage to march into the quarters because of the resistances of the people with Molotov cocktails. {divide}
The council stopped to collect the rubbish and the buses did not run for Erdogan who came to the city to join the opening of the academic year at Dicle University. Kurdish youth set the faculty of natural sciences-literature on fire and hung up the banner read "If Ocalan dies, we will destroy the world". During the speech of Erdogan, 40 teachers of the university stood up left the hall.
Besides Amed, the Kurdish people went on the streets in Van, Agri, Sırnak, Urfa and many other cities and expressed its rage. Despite police threats, shops were not opened in many cities. In the province Dogubeyazit, Agri, 20-year old Ahmet Ozhan was shot dead by the police on October 20. Kurdish youth set nearly 40 vehicles on fire first of all in Istanbul, Amed, Urfa, Idil and Adana. In Van ten thousands marched to the AKP city Office with the banner read "This fire will light you, too" and put down a black wreath in front of the building. In Mersin hundreds of high school students boycotted the school, and in Istanbul the Mothers for Peace occupied the Office of the AKP at Eminonu on October 20. As a result of the determined stance of the mothers, the local president of the AKP Koroglu had finally to accept a meeting with them.
Amed ESP made a press statement on October 18 in its office condemning the attacks on Ocalan and saying that these attacks are to be considered as provocative attacks on the Kurdish people. In its statements Amed ESP declared that the attacks on the Kurdish people have entered a new stage and that the state is insisting on its policy of denial and annihilation.
The Martyrs and Prisoners` Families of the ESP made a written statement on October 17 in which they protested against the attacks on Ocalan and demanded the immediate conviction of the responsible forces. KCK saluted the actions of the Kurdish people saying that the actions have reached a national level on October 20.
