Ceber was arrested on September 28, 2008 at the Derbent quarter of Istanbul while he was distributing the magazine Yuruyus and was put in jail the following day together with his three comrades.
Activists of the TAYAD and Yuruyus made an action in front of the hospital opening a banner written "Engin Ceber has been killed in prison. His murderer is the AKP government" and they drew attention to the problems at prisons. The ESP made a declaration where it demanded that those responsible for torture should be judged. On October 9, a march with torches was realised at the Gazi quarter in Istanbul for Ceber. At the action, the following was stated: "Engin Ceber is neither the first nor the last revolutionary that was killed in prison. He will live in our struggle with his courage, his love towards his people and hate towards fascism."
