In spite of all the protests of the social opposition, the parliament, proposed by the government, adopted the Law of Social Insurance and General Health Insurance (SSGSS) on April 17, and on October 1 it came into force. However, protests are continuing against the law; in many cities actions organised by joint platforms took place.
In Malatya, trade unions and revolutionary and democratic organisations gathered on September 28 in order to protest against the law saying: "we will continue our struggle until the SSGSS will be completely abolished in order to guarantee health care and social insurance rights for everybody equally and for free, and which is a must for a social state."
In Ankara, the trade union of the health care and social service labourers ( SES ) called on its members to go on the streets on October 1 to protest against the law. The demonstrators, who wanted to march to the local branch of the AKP , were stopped by the police. The protesting labourers stated that the new law makes it more difficult to retire, aims at cuts of 33% of the pensions and includes many more negative points and therefore; they will continue their struggle against it.
