The death of Dr. George Habbash, founding member and leader of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) created deep sadness in Turkey and Northern Kurdistan.
In its statement of January 27, the Solidarity Association with the Palestinian People gave information on the life and struggle of Dr. Habbash and said: "Habbash closed his eyes forever, but his rebelling spirit against barbarity and his ideals for freedom will continue to live in the Palestinians` minds and hearts!"
The Socialist Platform of the Oppressed ( ESP ) made a written statement on January 30 and commemorated Habbash. The ESP drew attention on the stance of the labourer class that Habbash had within the ranks of the Palestinians` national liberation struggle as well on the historical role he played for the creation and strengthening of the socialist vein of the Palestinian Intifada and said: "The Turkish revolutionaries who had shared the same dugouts in the camps of the PFLP with their Palestinian brothers for the sake of Palestine greet the comrade El Hakim whom they are thankful to. We have lost the representative of one line, who was open to help revolutionaries from all over the world and from Turkey, too. Commemorating him today means strengthening our relation with the historical struggle and our loyalty and this will be an opportunity to raise the responsibility for the Palestinian struggle."
