Protests against the new YOK president Yusuf Ziya Ozcan who said in a speech on January 6 „One reason for the mass run on universities is free education. This does not happen anywhere" defending tuition fees continue.
On January 9, members of Izmir Socialist Youth Association ( SGD ) chained up themselves at the local Ako office in Karsiyaka, Izmir and called for the resignation of YOK president Ozcan. The SGD activists wore t-shirts on which it said „YOK president resign" and „Money not for war but education" and also shouted slogans protesting the Turkish state`s operation in South Kurdistan. The police arrested the young activists.
Members of the union Genc-Sen which had been founded in December organised a protest action on January 10 in front of the local AKP office in Konak, Izmir. The Genc-Sen activists opened a banner read „No to tuition fees.Yusuf Ziya Ozcan resign" and said „The application of tuition fees at universities means edicting the open liquidation of youth with a working class and labourer background."
On January 9, members of Gens-Sen, Egitim-Sen and the Association of University Teachers organised a common action in front of Istanbul University.
