The textile workers' union Tekstil-Sen and Workers' League made a workers' mass meeting on 25 Mart in Istanbul within the framework of the preparations for May Day celebrations. At the meeting carrying the title "Working class and trade union movement in the world and in our country", 100 workers discussed the preparations for May Day demonstrations and for the hearing on 13 April where the General President of Tekstil-Sen, Ayse Yumli Yeter, General President of Limter-Is , Cem Dinc, and General Secretary of Limter-Is, Zafer Tektas will also be judged.
A video film about the struggle of the workers in Uruguay who occupied the fabrics and carried out production in these places by their own was shown and some experiences from the workers' struggles in Latin America were explained.
At the speeches made on behalf of Tekstil-Sen, Limter-Is and public employees from ESP , it was expressed that the present structure of the trade unions do not meet with the necessities of the period and it was stated that the trade unions should be developed on the line of class-based unions that goes beyond the borders of the laws of the military coup, that takes the struggle of the working class as a whole, that stands as a side on the social problems such as the Kurdish question or the problems of the Allevites and that goes forward on the line of de facto legitimate struggle. The workers also discussed the problems of organising the unemployed and the workers without insurance.
It was emphasised at the meeting that the May Day demonstration of this year, which is the 30th anniversary of the May Day massacre in 1977, should be organised in Taksim Square. Taksim Square is a big square of Istanbul where all kind of demonstrations have been banned since the May Day demonstration in 1977 where the state forces killed 37 workers.
