In his speech made in the evening of 9 November at the press reception, the Chief of Staff, fascist General Yasar Buyukanit has once again targeted the Ulkede Ozgur Gundem newspaper. Buyukanit, who said " PKK has got daily paper in this country. It is publishing messages from Imrali (-Small island where PKK leader A. Ocalan is being kept in prison) ...These shouldn't be permitted. How these can be published?", also talked about the article 301, regarding "insult to Turkish-ness" that has been made as a cover for the arbitrary attacks on the freedom of press, and stated "Every law can be debated, but in the EU countries, in Germany for instance, if a citizen would say "I like the Nazi thought" without doing terrorist actions, then he/she will be put in prison. Italy is the same, if one would criticise the government or the legal institutions, then he/she will be put in prison".
Buyukanit had given statements targeting the Kurdish national press, at first the Ulkede Ozgur Gundem newspaper many times before. Therefore, the paper was among the first targets of the new TMY (Anti-terror Law). As a matter of fact, it came face to face with banning short time after TMY's approval.
