The police terror in the revolutionary and democratic workers´ districts of Istanbul resulting from the new anti-terror law (TMY) has been confronted with the barricades of Okmeydani. The police, who made several raids in houses and Cafes with tanks and a numerous policemen during the last days in 8 neighborhoods , among them Bagcilar, Gazi , Okmeydani, Gülsuyu and 1 Mayis, entered into the neighborhood of Okmeydani with hundreds of policemen, with tanks and special forces wearing masks and machine guns. They made identity controls and detained people walking on the road. Furthermore, they destroyed posters and banners of the revolutionaries.
Many revolutionary organizations and young antifascists responded to this attack by marching to the place where the forces of the police were concentrated and chanted slogans like "Okmeydani will be the grave of fascism!", "Police, murder out of Okmeydani!", "Shoulder on shoulder against fascism!"
The conflicts starting there lasted for hours and were spread over to other parts of the neighborhood, too.
The police used tear gas and the revolutionaries responded with stones and barricades.
This way, the terror and the psychological pressure the police tried to create were fought back in the neighborhood of Okmeydani.
ESP (Socialist Platform of the Oppressed) made a press declaration at the Galatasaray Square of Istanbul on August, 29, and expressed that "they want everybody to know that the revolutionaries and the people have the right of legitimate defense in face of these attacks".
