On Sunday, June 17, 2007; the OSS (Students' Selection Exam) was realized once again. The OSS is an exam that is applied to all young people who want to enter the university in Turkey and Northern Kurdistan. Every year, almost 1.5 million students can't study at university as they had failed in the exam. Instead, they have to join the army of the unemployed. While bourgeois children are taught at private extra-prepatory schools to pass the OSS, the children of the labourer people do not have this opportunity so that they must face the big fact of unequal opportunity in education. The preparation period for the exam becomes a depressive, stressful time for the youth which takes away their future and robs their dreams. This year 1.640.259 students in total took the exam, but university access will be given to only 292.000 young people.
The exam, which is referred to as "Students` Suppress Exam", carried the rage of the students, whose dreams it destroys, on the streets yet another time. In different cities of Turkey and Northern Kurdistan, youth organisations organised common actions.
In Istanbul, students of higher school and university organized a rally under the title "Let us smash the OSS wall" on June 9 at Kadikoy. Altogether 500 young people joined the rally which was realized by different youth organisations, among them also the Socialist Youth Association ( SGD ), as well as supported by trade unions, such as Tekstil-Sen and the labourer officials of ESP , and other organisations. The mass opened a common banner and shouted the slogans "Cancel the OSS!", "Youth are future, future is socialism", "We can't be barred from our right to go to university", "Long live the brotherhood of the people" and "Not students, but the putschists must be judged!". In the common statement, the students demanded the cancellation of OSS and their right of free and academic education in the mother tongue.
In Adana, the high school SGD activists hanged up banners in front of three different high schools on June 17 to protest against the OSS. The banner saying "I want my right of university-Cancel the OSS!" was hanged up for a long time. On June 19, high school students organized a common demonstration and blockaded the traffic on the road despite attempts of the police to stop them. The youth, among them the organisations SGD, Dev-Lis, Emek Youth, Enternasyonalist Genclik, Liseli Genc Umut and Yurtsever Cepheli Liseliler, opened the common banner saying "The only alternative to the 5 options of OSS is struggling".
This action against the OSS was the most crowded one within the last period. The action finished with traditional dances and a performance of the SGD theatre group.
In Antakya, the youth organisations SGD, OGD, Ekim Youth and the youth of DSG blockaded the traffic on June 9 demanding the cancellation of OSS. The youth marched from the Antakya branch of the Human Rights Association IHD to Ulus Square. At the demonstration, also supported by the ESP, attention was drawn to the unequal opportunity in education and the struggle as the only solution. The young people shouted the slogans "Cancel the exams AOBP and OSS!", "Free and academic education in the mother tongue", "There's no liberation on your own, either together or none of us" and "Long live the revolutionary solidarity".
In Izmir, youth organisations such as the SGD high school youth, the Democratic Youth Movement (DGH), Isci Mucadelesi and Özgür Yasam Egitim ve Dayanısma Kooperatifleri organized a demonstration against the OSS on June 10 which was also joined by parents. After the common statement in which the youth demanded democratic education in the mother tongue instead of the OSS, the theatre group Yenikapi performed a play.
In Malatya, different youth organisations realized a common action against the OSS. On June 9, the youth, among them the SGD, DTP Youth, Emek Youth, Association of Demokratic Youth, and the YDG, threw preparation books for the exam OSS on the floor.
This year the actions against OSS organized together formed the chain of the youth within the common actions of the developing social struggle. Especially the common rally in Istanbul, which was organized by a broad basis for the first time, and the fact that there were more than just one action against the exam, point towards a good development in the high school students' struggle in comparison to the former years. The youth will continue to become active and demand their future on the streets.
