2006 Newroz[1] was celebrated with a great determinacy, enthusiasm and mass participation in Turkey and Northern Kurdistan. The Kurdish people have given the message of commitment in the struggle, passion in resistance and insistence for brotherhood during Newroz which is a day of festival for the Mesopotamian people and the Kurds. The official "nevruz" celebrations, the Newroz syndrome in connection with the "psychological war plans", the police panzers, military tanks and the show of war-planes and threats; all these were left as attempts in vain.

Through widespread mass participation from almost all cities of Northern Kurdistan, the Kurdish people proved that they are still after their national and democratic demands, and they increased and spread out the fire of Newroz. The fire has both enlightened and gave the message that it shall be blown up in the ranks of the enemy as a fire-ball. About 500 thousand peopled gathered in Diyarbakir, the biggest city of Kurdistan. They brought down the check points set by the police. The voices and colours of free Kurdistan covered all the area. About 100 thousand in Van, thousands of people in Nusaybin, Batman, Semdinli , Hakkari and other Kurdish cities have flown to the streets. And in Turkey, about 100 thousand people in Istanbul, 40 thousand in Izmir, 35 thousand people in Mersin have celebrated the Newroz. In total, millions of Kurds, Turkish labourers and revolutionaries, who are not being influenced by Turkish chauvinism, have shout "freedom for Kurdish nation" and the peoples' brotherhood in the demonstrations.

Historically the fire of Newroz -as a symbol of awakening and revival- means rebellion and commitment in the fight by the Kurdish people against the colonialist fascist Turkish oppression, its denial and annihilation policies.

The colonialist regime, which conducted a concentrated attack against the Kurdish people and the Kurdish national movement in 2006, did not limit itself with Newroz syndrome and threats of provocation. They added the false Newroz celebrations into their traditional policies of organising false 1st May celebrations and founding false communist parties. They have shown live on TV channels the official celebrations in Caucus countries and in Turkey in order to distort its content of resistance and struggle.

In many cities of Turkey, PKK celebrated the 2006 Newroz together with revolutionary and progressive parties. 2006 Newroz is mostly organised by DTP (Democratic Society Party), ESP (Socialist Platform of the Oppressed), EMEP (Party of Labour), SDP (Socialist Democracy Party), IHD (Human Rights Association) and People's Houses. Kurdish people have filled the meeting points with their traditional dresses, language, slogans, enthusiasm and anger reflecting their cultural characteristics. They have declared their opposition to the "without PKK and A. Ocalan" solution of the imperialist forces and colonialist regime. Through their actions, they have also expressed their anger and commitment against attempts to acquit the counter-guerrilla gangs in Semdinli and the general Yasar Buyukanit.

The revolutionary, progressive parties and organisations have participated in the Istanbul demonstration in unison under the name of "Initiative of People's Brotherhood", and they have carried a banner writing "United Struggle against Chauvinism and Imperialism".

MLCP forces have participated widespread and effectively within the Newroz demonstrations in Turkey and Northern Kurdistan. In Antep, MLCP Kurdistan Organisation put a banner writing "to the Newroz, Uprising and Barricades" on the wall together with a bomb. In Istanbul-Gulsuyu, they have celebrated Newroz with armed demonstrations. They marched through streets by shouting slogans; "Long Live Newroz, Long Live Socialism", "More and More Uprising - MLCP Kurdistan". They saluted the Ironsmith Kawa by setting a Newroz fire. As retaliation to the military operations on the Kurdish guerrillas and attacks on the Newroz, MLCP has bombed the Istanbul-Pendik OYAK Bank and the Gebze district branch of the AKP (Justice and Development Party). In Izmir, KGO (Communist Youth Organisation) militias organised a rally in Ege University with a banner writing "to the revolution, socialism with the fire of Newroz-KGO" and blocked the traffic for sometime with petrol bombs.

During Newroz activities, Marxist Leninist Communists have also demanded the freedom of Ahmed Saadat, the General Secretary of PFLP (People's Front for the Liberation of Palestine), who was kidnapped by Israel Zionism in a Palestinian prison. As the symbol of Turkish and Kurdish peoples' brotherhood, they have commemorated Tuncay Yildirim, a member of MLCP -who was martyred on a Newroz day while continuing with his death fast action during political prisoners' resistance- and Cihan Soydas from DHKP-C, and Mazlum Dogan, a PKK martyr who is symbolised with Newroz.

[1] 21 March Newroz festival means awakening and revival in a new day. It symbolises the resistance of the Ironsmith Kawa against the tyrant King Dehak in Mesopotamia. According to the myth, King Dehak was living by eating the brains of two young children everyday. On that day, the Kurdish Ironsmith Kawa's child was the next to be eaten. But the Ironsmith Kawa kills the King Dehak with a sledgehammer and sent this good news to the peoples by setting a fire. Thus Newroz started to be celebrated every year as the symbol of liberation and freedom from tyranny.
