"... And so, in the course of development, all that was previously real becomes unreal, loses it necessity, its right of existence, its rationality. And in the place of moribund reality comes a new, viable reality -- peacefully if the old has enough intelligence to go to its death without a struggle; forcibly if it resists this necessity..." (Friedrich Engels, Ludwig Feuerbach and the End of Classıcal German Philosophy )
The lands of Kurdistan, which had been historically divided into four parts, are now passing through an irresistible reality of its own that express itself as a necessity taking pieces from the 'ordinary' flow of the history. Being under the savage yoke of the imperialist states and the fascist colonialists for years, Kurdish people have been deprived of having a free and united Kurdistan so far, but by their continuous insurrections and resistances throughout history, they have always kept their national identity and consciousness, mostly owing to the unbroken struggle of the revolutionary forces, PKK in particular. But now, especially with the Rojava revolution growing day by day since 2012, the reality of Kurdish people in four parts imposes the change in the existing historical status quo of the region together with bringing revolutionary conditions. The move of the independence referendum happened on the 25th of September in Southern Kurdistan and also the tough process going on since then have to be analyzed with this aspect.
As it is known, the referendum in Southern Kurdistan passed with 93 percent of yes for the independence. However after, by the 16th of October, the Iraqi army and the Iran supported Hashd al-Shaabi forces (Popular Mobilization Forces) started to actualize the common threats of the imperialists and colonialist of Kurdistan (Turkey, Iran and Iraq) by invading Kirkuk and some other territories of the Southern Kurdistan. Against those attacks, both 'leaderships' of the autonomous Kurdish Regional Government, the KDP and YNK, ordered their forces to retreat without any resistance and after that, they sought for negotiations to decrease the tension. However this honorless attitude of those who count themselves as the leaders of Southern Kurds didn't help and they finally fulfilled their betrayal by declaring the withdrawal of both the decision and the result of the referendum. Thereby now, along with the control of the city Kirkuk, dozens of other Kurdish towns and villages including 11 main oil fields, airports and border gates passed to Iraqi government and Hashd al-Shaabi forces. seem to increase their military and political oppression on Southern Kurds for the following days.
Yes, the actual situation, which has turned the tide of the independence will, now referring to a defeat. However the reason behind this defeat can be explained neither with the very decision of the independence referendum itself, nor with some superficial analysis about the inopportuneness of the timing for it. Just as how the communists of Kurdistan, MLKP, has been stating from the beginning of the referendum process, the self determination is a right to be recognized unconditionally. In that sense, Kurdistan has the right to unite or create its own independent state in each parts based on the self-determination right and it's legitimacy cannot be questioned. Now if we are talking about a defeat that arose after the referendum, then the responsibility of this defeat does not belong to the independence will itself but to those who rejected to hold the referendum process together with Kurdistan's revolutionary leaderships and democratic actors in all parts, and gave the priority to their bourgeois interests rather than the national needs in this critical moment.
That is to say, by this internal betrayal of those oligarchic 'leaderships' in Southern Kurdistan, the independence referendum seemed to result in deep wounds for the Kurdish people. However in long term (or we should say "short term" instead, with respect to the reality of the Middle East) it would help Kurdish people to understand the importance of their national unification among all parts. In that sense, the referendum showed that their will of independence, which is nothing other than an irresistible necessity of the reality anymore, cannot go on together with the existing political rulership of the autonomous Kurdish Regional Government, but instead it can be actualized with a revolutionary and democratic leadership that embraces all the parts. By being the embodied form of the independence together with building a true democratic structure that ensures the basic rights of peoples from different nations and beliefs, Rojava revolution is the star shell of this reality of independence and freedom, a compass not only for the Kurds but also for the whole region and the world. The honorable Kurdish people had declared their will of independence all around the world as a reflection of Rojava revolution's viable reality. Now it is time to send this old and moribund reality completely out from the history!
